Please be aware that over the next few days, we will be working with the University’s Facilities Management Service to water and maintain our sporting fields, which will ensure a location for people in our community to continue to train, and practice, team sports.

The water used will be sourced from the adjacent Lake Zot, which will progress the lake to the next stage of the remediation project as part of UNE’s long term strategy for water management and drought resilience.

We would like to announce that the SportUNE change rooms are officially open – which is very welcome news for our staff, patrons, and guests.

As you will be expecting, the UNE swimming pool construction is nearing completion with the new facility boasting a 25 metre, 6 lane indoor heated pool, utilising a state-of-the-art geothermal base heating system. This sustainable heating system is programmed to regulate temperature across the extreme variations of weather experienced in Armidale, and will reduce SportUNE’s annual CO2 emissions by approximately 197,000kg, which is equivalent to the CO2 absorbed by 8,000 trees.

We have been working with the University’s Facilities Management Service and the Armidale Regional Council to progress the final stages of development and open the pool, however as I am sure you will be aware, the drought we are currently experiencing is having impacts across the region.

Whilst we are excited that the pool construction will be completed as advised, the refilling and the ongoing maintenance will require much-needed water that Armidale simply cannot afford. For this reason, the pool will remain closed until such time that we can ensure proper operation in balance with our environmental obligations.

As we receive more information we will eagerly share this and we appreciate the patience of our members and patrons during the construction of the new pool.

As always, should you have any further questions please don’t hesitate to contact SportUNE on 6773 3856 or

I am pleased to report that the University Chancellor, Mr James Harris, has made an important announcement on the future of the UNE swimming pool.

Chancellor Harris has announced that the University will be undertaking a full redevelopment of our swimming pool and the sports centres’ main amenities and change-rooms. Construction will commence next month with work expected to be completed August 2019. The construction cost will be more than $7million.

This decision represents a major capital reinvestment on the University’s part. It reflects a significant endorsement of SportUNE’s services and facilities to the University and the wider community, and a recognition of the role played by sport in the broader student experience.

The new facility will continue to feature a 25-metre, 6 lane indoor heated pool. In addition, there will be a revitalised physical space, which will utilise a state-of-the-art geothermal base heating system. This sustainable heating system will be environmentally beneficial. It will regulate the temperature across the extreme variations of weather experienced over a typical Armidale year. Gas heating will provide further support to the system. The new facility will reduce SportUNE’s annual CO2 emissions by approximately 197,000kg, which is equivalent to the CO2 absorbed by 8,000 trees.

During the construction phase, the existing change-rooms will not be available, but SportUNE will be providing temporary amenities. As work progresses, we will communicate details to you through direct email and notifications around the sports centre.

In the meantime, should you have any questions please don’t hesitate to contact SportUNE on 6773 3856 or

This project has involved significant planning, and I appreciate the patience of students and other members during the period of the pool closure.

The plant equipment at the UNE Pool suffered a major failure last week. The filter component is no longer operating and will have to be replaced. We regret to advise that we must close the pool.

While the pool equipment has been subject to a regular program of maintenance, it has now reached the end of its lifespan. The pool was built in 1980, the first indoor pool in Armidale.  It has been a vital part of UNE’s sporting facilities, serving many generations of students, staff and community members.

Various repairs have been made over the years, but the ageing condition of the equipment now calls for a replacement rather than a partial repair.  This work will be significant and time-consuming, and the pool will have to be closed throughout 2017 and possibly into 2018.

While we recognise the inconvenience this will involve, UNE plans to take the opportunity to enhance the entire pool facilities during this period.

UNE sincerely regrets the temporary closure of the pool. We look forward to updating you once the redevelopment process is underway.
