Sticking to your fitness goals

Sometimes it’s pretty hard to make your news years resolutions stick – no matter how good your intentions were at the beginning of January.

As we approach the beginning of a new year… have you thought about what your goals for 2022 will be?

Creating new habits (or breaking old ones) is another way we like to phrase ‘new year’s resolutions. Whether it be losing a few kilos, being able to run a marathon, eating healthier, improving your overall wellbeing with small steps, or going to the gym three times a week; want to know a little secret….wanting to do it is a lot harder than doing it.

So, we’ve got a few tips to keep you on track to creating long-lasting habits for you!

Set clear goals.

Be specific on what you want to get out of the resolution. Being able to run a few km’s is much harder to achieve than having a concise target like 5km’s. Being clear on what your goal is will make it a lot easier for yourself as you work up to it.

Don’t rush.

All good habits are never created overnight. Instead, they slowly evolve with consistent effort. Try breaking up your goal into smaller goals. An example might be if your aim is to be able to lift 10kg in a bicep curl; begin with trying to do 5kg.

Also, it’s better for your body to work into new routines like this, but having that goal in sight will help push you further – and who knows, you may smash that goal and set another! #DreamBig

One goal at a time.

Who else has a lengthy dot-pointed list from last January with resolutions they never saw through?! 🙋🏽‍♀️ The issue here is trying to start too many things at once – and this can actually lead to burnout! Although some resolutions go hand-in-hand; like trying to lose weight and eat healthier, sticking to one main goal at a time will make it easier for you to commit.

Ask for support.

One of the hardest parts of creating a new habit is, actually sticking to it. If you’re finding it hard to stay on track, need some motivation, or are not sure where to begin then maybe consider joining a group of like-minded people. You could try joining one of SportUNE’s group fitness classes, committing to exercise with a friend, or meeting with one of our amazing personal trainers – they can help you stick to the right direction.

Be kind to yourself.

Judging yourself because you haven’t been able to stick to the goal before or doubting your ability to reach it, can be extremely detrimental.

Always be kind to yourself along the journey. It isn’t the end of the world if you skip the gym one day! Perhaps if you don’t go to the gym that day just make sure you don’t double down on junk food… Instead, be motivated to get back on track the next day – you got this!

Celebrate the small triumphs.

Starting the journey towards a goal is a celebration in itself! Don’t wait until you’re at the finish line to congratulate yourself but do so every time you hit a new personal best, or start to see your jeans loosen, or run 1km without stopping.

The best advice we can give you is to just start! Everything looks a little harder at the starting line but once you make that first step, you’re getting yourself closer to that finish line.
