Four fantastic days of athletic competition took place last week at SOPAC in Homebush. Representing UNE at the annual UniSport Nationals were Karina Brown, Emma Kennedy, Bella Stewart and Gemma Oakley who competed in individual events, as well as a 4x100m relay.

The relay may have been the first time the four girls ran together, however with their experiences and passions combined, their team exhibited amazing sportsmanship and determination. Their main goal was to successfully get the baton to the finish line, and did so in only 54.14 seconds. This resulted in the girls placing 5th in the final.

Their individual accomplishments are just as notable. Karina Brown performed astoundingly placing 7th overall in the 100m Hurdles final. An injury forced her to withdraw from The Australian Athletics Championships a week earlier, yet Karina’s persistence on the National Games field showed when she finished the hurdles at a staggering time of 15.56.

She also competed at the 100m and the 200m events. She placed 20th in the 100m with a time of 14.01, and 23rd in the 200m with a time of 28.84.

It was Bella Stewarts first time competing for UNE and brought us home 8th place in both the high and long jump. Stewart cleared 1.60m in high jump, and recorded 4.82m in long jump.

It was a busy weekend for Emma Kennedy who competed in the 100m hurdles, 100m sprint, 200m and the long jump. Placing 8th in the 100m hurdles, Kennedy recorded a remarkable time of 18.04.

Her other accomplishments include: 12th place in 100m with a time of 12.98 and jumping 4.37m in the long jump. She also placed 18th in the 200m in 27.52 seconds.

And finally, Gemma Oakley did an impressive job placing 25th in the 200m sprint with a time of 30.15 seconds.

We missed Finn O’Keefe in the 800m event due to illness, as well as Tay-leiha Clark who due to injury, pulled out of competing as current NSW championship in the triple jump. We hope you both recover quickly!

SportUNE would like to thank our incredible athletics for their representation of UNE and a well-deserved a round of applause for their spectacular performances and results! We can’t wait to see what you will all achieve next!

We would also like to thank Armidale Athletics for their continued support of the UNE student-athletes.
